Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese art of balancing and harmonizing the flow of natural energies in our surroundings to create beneficial effects in our lives. Getting your home or office space organized has the same beneficial effects. Feng Shui is fancy organizing.
I do not mean to diminish the Eastern art form in any way. I have great respect for the traditions and rituals that are part of Feng Shui. What I do mean to say is that without studying these somewhat complicated methods, you can create balance and harmony to your home. Denise Linn, the author of Feng Shui for the Soul, says "Your home should give you a sense of belonging... It should be a reference place that you look forward to returning to, an anchoring point from which you venture into the world, and a place where you know your heart resides." Clutter clearing, in my opinion, is the single biggest step you can take to begin to restore harmony to your space. Pick an area of your home that is cluttered and disorganized, and think about how it got that way. What are the obstacles keeping you from restoring the order? How does that problem area reflect other aspects of your life? Visualize the same space organized and functioning the way you would like. Imagine how that makes you feel when you walk into that space. Now, with that end result in mind go after that space. Create your vision. I guarantee you that you will experience a shift in your life - call it energy or call it inspiration - call it anything you like, but you will notice changes! Happy clutter clearing. Often, we think that we need this large block of time to tackle an organizing project, and since we don't ever seem to find that large block of time, the projects never get done. In fact they just pile up and overwhelm us, and then create additional stress in our lives. Sound familiar?
Try this - Pick a small organizing task that you can do in 30 minutes. Half an hour is a reasonable amount of time that almost any of us could find, once a week. Accomplishing these smaller tasks is very satisfying, and also great motivation to move on to slightly larger projects. Follow this link for some great 30 minute projects, and the resources to do the job right: http://www.containerstore.com/experthelp/tips/30MinuteProjects.jhtml I am going to go clean out a drawer right now!
